PA Organizes Deir Jarir “Olive Harvest” Provocation With Officials, Foreign Volunteers and Media
An official PA commission is mobilizing attendance for an “olive harvest” event in Deir Jarir, with a call for the IDF to prevent a confrontation in advance.
The Palestinian Authority is organizing a planned provocation under the banner of an “olive harvest” in Deir Jarir, near Ramallah in Judea and Samaria, tomorrow, October 21, at 8:30 a.m. The gathering is expected to bring together Palestinian participants, international volunteers, public figures and senior Palestinian government officials, with extensive media coverage also planned.
The PA’s official Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission is calling on Palestinians to attend. Its involvement places an official Palestinian Authority body at the center of the preparations, alongside the anticipated participation of government figures and foreign volunteers.
The combination of organized attendance, senior political representation and a substantial media presence gives the event a purpose beyond agricultural work. The olive harvest provides the setting for a coordinated political gathering, with the prospect of a confrontation carrying an immediate audience.
Official PA Body Mobilizes Participants
The call to participate is being issued through the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, the Palestinian Authority institution involved in activity against Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria.
The commission’s role is a central element of the event. An official body is mobilizing attendance for a gathering that is also expected to draw senior Palestinian officials. That gives the preparations an institutional and political character before participants arrive in Deir Jarir.
International volunteers and public figures are expected to join the Palestinian attendees. Their anticipated presence, together with the planned media coverage, would give any confrontation visibility beyond the immediate area.
The announced arrangements therefore need to be considered together. The location, fixed starting time, official mobilization and expected attendance form part of the same planned event.
Media Coverage Is Part of the Preparations
Extensive coverage is being organized in advance. Cameras and reporters are consequently part of the expected gathering, alongside the officials, activists and volunteers.
That matters when assessing the potential for friction. A confrontation at an event with a prepared media presence can quickly become the principal story, displacing the agricultural activity under which the gathering was organized.
The concern is the creation of a public confrontation in a setting already prepared to attract attention. By the time such a confrontation develops, the presence of numerous participants, political figures and cameras could make restoring order considerably more difficult.
The appropriate moment for preventive action is before the scheduled assembly, while the authorities still have time to establish clear restrictions and communicate them.
IDF Must Act Before the Gathering Begins
The IDF must declare the relevant area a closed military zone in advance to prevent a confrontation. The announced starting time of 8:30 a.m. provides a clear deadline for preparations.
Any closure should be defined and communicated before participants assemble. An advance decision would establish the conditions on the ground and allow security forces to prepare for enforcement before a crowd forms.
Waiting for friction to develop would leave the response dependent on events already unfolding in front of a substantial media presence. Preventive action should address the planned gathering before it reaches that stage.
The PA has announced the framework: an “olive harvest” event, official mobilization, expected senior attendance, foreign volunteers and extensive coverage. The IDF must respond to that organized provocation with timely measures aimed at preventing the confrontation.
